Skills crisis is global - Business Day 13 June 2008 - INTERNATIONALLY, privately held businesses reflected employment growth of only 4%, compared with SA`s 6% year-on-year growth rate, according to Grant Thornton`s employment growth index, released yesterday. With double digit growth Vietnam (14%), India (12%), Mainland China (12%) and Armenia (11%) were at the top of the employment growth table. Thailand (-4%), Italy (0%), and France, Ireland, and New Zealand (1%) were at the bottom. One factor curbing business growth is no doubt a lack of skills. This was still the biggest constraint to business growth, Grant Thornton found. The shortage is not a domestic phenomenon. Globally, 37% of privately held businesses in 34 countries rank a shortage of skills as their top business growth constraint. SA`s construction sector is the most affected. Businesses are using a variety of strategies to develop and fast-track key employees.
